Management Essentials: Effective Delegation Skills

Ineffective managers do it all (and are usually drowning). Effective managers know when, and more importantly, how, to delegate work effectively. Sure, you can just give the work to someone else to do, but to get it done right is like playing chess in 3-D: you need to evaluate which employee can handle it (or benefit from taking it on); you need to use the right level of support, coaching, autonomy, and direction to give; and you need to understand how to close the loop and provide feedback. This session will teach concrete skills so managers can both free up valuable time for higher level work and develop peers and subordinates for the next level in their career.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate who can do the job or needs to move up to the next level

  • Use the five-part delegation dial to calibrate what level of supervision and support is needed for each task

  • Become a more effective manager by building in feedback loops to correct performance on the spot—not at the year-end evaluation
