Management Essentials: Getting Comfortable with Giving Feedback

Giving feedback is an essential skill for every manager from a front-line fundraiser who managers a staff assistant, to a team leader who overseers an entire division. However, in many fundraising shops, this skill is sorely lacking, poorly executed, or in some cases, almost entirely absent. Delivering good feedback is a matter of three things: understanding what makes us uncomfortable and working to overcome it; learning some simple, easy-to-implement rules for giving it; and following through with a feedback loop. In this session, we’ll explore all three and have a chance to practice it in a safe and non-threating environment. Better feedback means better managers, more trust in the office, and a happier staff all around.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore what good feedback looks and feels like

  • Learn what comprises the most important and effective feedback

  • Understand what holds us back from giving feedback

  • Learn to apply the behavior + impact + alternative positive behavior rule

  • Practice giving feedback and getting feedback on our feedback!
